Welcome to Village Secrets: A Journey of Craftsmanship, Culture, and Collaboration

In 2015, while working in the Foundation (corporate social investment) division of an international corporate, I encountered a remarkable cobbler whose exceptional craftsmanship left an indelible mark on me. This serendipitous introduction sparked an idea: blending his meticulous workmanship with the vibrant, culturally rich South African shweshwe fabric could create something extraordinary. Intrigued by the possibilities, I insisted on meeting him in person.

One Sunday morning, I found myself in downtown Johannesburg, standing before an unassuming underground parking garage. To my surprise, the cobbler’s workshop was a tiny “broom room,” an unexpected yet fitting setting that amplified my admiration for his dedication and skill. Despite the modest surroundings, our connection was instant. We shared a vision and a passion for quality, creativity, and authenticity.

From that moment, a unique collaboration was born. Our arrangement was simple yet empowering: I paid him per pair of shoes, ensuring he maintained the freedom to take on other clients and avoid the monotony and low wages of factory line work.

Thus, Village Secrets was born—a name that symbolizes the fusion of traditional craftsmanship and modern design, a hidden gem unearthed from an unexpected place.

Since its inception, Village Secrets has grown steadily, fueled by passion and the compelling story behind each pair of shoes. Every design embodies a piece of South African heritage.

Now, as we celebrate our 10th year, we remain steadfast in our mission: to bring you authentically South African-designed and handcrafted shoes. This year, we’re going all out South African, staying true to our roots and our true north. Thank you for being part of this incredible journey.
